Athena Azevedo
Athena Azevedo is a Brasília and NYC-based photographer, art director, and producer known for her bold and colorful photographs rooted in journalism and fine art. Azevedo is a designated Graphis Photography Master whose creative work has garnered international recognition, having received 15 awards since 2014.
Sleeping Giant Is a series of six photographs starring the Teatro Nacional Claudio Santoro, the Oscar Niemeyer-designed national theater of Brasília. The photographs were taken in 2014 during the rehearsal of João MacDowell’s Symphony n.1 with Brazil’s National Orchestra at the UNESCO World Heritage site that had just closed for restoration. The double exposure of the images suggests multiple uses for the theater complex.
Sleeping Giant was first exhibited at the International Brazilian Opera Company’s 10th anniversary exhibition at the Consulate General of Brazil in NYC in late 2023 and is now on view at the Sossego NYC showroom.
